Disciplines

This translation is a brief summary of the text in Dutch. The full version is available in Dutch.

      DKO covers four disciplines:

      • Visual and audiovisual arts
      • Music
      • Dance
      • The art of the word - drama

Within the disciplines, the courses are divided into grades. Grades consist of several study years (not necessarily two). When you complete a grade, you receive a certificate.

The first grade is an introductory course for children aged between 6 and 7. They learn about the discipline through fun activities. This grade is not compulsory. Children can opt for a discipline-specific or a cross-disciplinary introductory course. In the discipline-specific introductory course, they choose one discipline. In the cross-disciplinary introductory course, they do not have to choose a specific discipline, but can try out two or more different disciplines. From the age of 8, they can then choose what suits them best.

As of the age of 8, children always start in the second grade. Even if they have not followed an introductory course. After the second grade, children follow the compulsory course, irrespective of their age. They then choose a specific discipline. Is your child older than 8 and does he or she want to follow a course? In that case, contact the academy to discuss which group or grade your child can join.

Each academy also has its own artistic educational project. This ‘artistic educational vision’ indicates what the academy considers important in the courses.
